onion sets
Planted out onion sets that I got from Menards. They're in the grass covered half of the large square bed.
Last year, I planted onions in beds I'd filled with compost and they were the happiest, biggest onions I've ever grown. This year I only had enough compost for that far corner of the bed. So I added some bone meal to the soil where I planted the onions. According to SF Gate (http://homeguides.sfgate.com/soil-amendments-onions-like-70618.html) onions and other bulbs like the phosphorus in the bone meal.
Not the most dynamic picture of an onion set, but you get the idea. Onion, soaker hose and a sprinkling of bone meal.
Also planted some onions among my strawberries, which are supposed to be a good companion plant for onions (http://www.oregonlive.com/hg/index.ssf/2010/01/fit_strawberries_into_a_tight.html).
